SWINDON Town assistant manager Tommy Wright admitted he does not know whether victory against Wigan Athletic tonight will be enough to keep he and manager John Sheridan in a job.
Following defeat to Hull City on Saturday, Town’s poor record under Sheridan and Wright stretched to just one win in 11 games as the Robins remained in the bottom four of League One.
Two draws in the same group of fixtures has seen Swindon claim five points out of a possible 33 since victory over Oxford United in late-November.
Asked whether that kind of form is enough to keep the management pair in a job, especially if Town should lose tonight, Wright said: “I don’t know. You’d have to ask the powers that be about that.
“It’s not a great record, but there are circumstances around that with the players’ loans and injuries.
“That’s not an excuse, we’re in the bottom four for a reason, and we have to accept it and take it on the chin.
“Hopefully, we can turn it around, and I think we will turn it around.
“We know our form is not good and we do have to improve that. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to understand that.
“At any level of football, if you’ve got a run like we’re on, it’s not good so we have to improve it.”
The Town assistant also admitted after defeat to the Tigers that his players are suffering from a lack of confidence following the club’s poor run.
Wright highlighted the encouraging performance away at Ipswich Town as something that must be repeated if possible, but said a lack of belief is the biggest problem for a losing side to solve.
Wright said: “When we do keep the ball at the moment, we’re a bit tentative, a bit lacking in confidence and we do play too many square balls.
“If you look at the Ipswich game, we were playing forward and we ran forward – we have to get that back in our game.
“We do need to be a bit more positive in our play and be a bit more confident.
“Confidence is a massive thing when it comes to footballers – we might be lacking a little bit of that, but the biggest and most important thing is the effort we put in.”
