SWINDON Town head coach Ben Garner is set to be announced as the new Charlton Athletic manager in the next few days after compensation was agreed between the two clubs, Adver Sport understands.
News broke of Garner’s impending exit on Wednesday, May 25 but a lengthy delay in confirming the switch – understood to be caused by the 42-year-old being on holiday with his family – left both clubs in a state of limbo over their respective coaching situations.
The Addicks are thought to have finally sewn up a two-year deal for Garner after the man the London club has decided should replace Johnnie Jackson agreed personal terms.
Charlton are said to also want Town’s assistant coaches Scott Lindsey and Scott Marshall. It is understood that the pair have both had zoom calls with Charlton and the final detail in the mass-switch will be working out a compensation package prior to the news being announced.
Athletic finished the League One season in 13th while Town missed out on promotion to the third tier courtesy of a penalty shoot-out defeat to Port Vale in the play-offs.
With new managers in place very soon, Swindon and Charlton will be hoping to improve on their most-recent showing next term when the respective aims for both will be promotion.
Despite having to search for a new coaching team for the second time since arriving at the club last summer, the imminent announcement may well be welcome news for Town owner Clem Morfuni.
The Australian has taken some flack from a number of fans who wished to see the club make a comment on the rumours surrounding Garner’s supposed departure.
However, in a recent interview with Adver Sport, Morfuni stated he is unable to comment on rumour and hearsay as it can lead to legal problems between any other club or persons involved.
The Australian also saw director of football Ben Chorley quit his role last Monday, the man who recommended Garner for the Town job in July 2021.
Chorley is said to have quit his job for personal reasons, with Morfuni saying there certainly had not been a falling out between the pair.
An announcement on the club’s new director of football could come in the next few days as well with Town’s owner keen to fill his club’s key vacancies before he flies back to Australia.
