SWINDON Town have announced the signing of former Leicester City striker Jacob Wakeling on a one-year deal.
The 20-year-old, who was released by the Foxes last month, becomes Scott Lindsey’s seventh capture of the season and is the sixth player under the age of 23 to have arrived at the County Ground this summer.
He follows Oscar Massey and Tyrese Shade as attacking signings made by Lindsey, although Wakeling is the first out-and-out striker to join.
The forward played the final 20 minutes of Swindon's pre-season friendly win away at Melksham Town last Saturday as a trialist before his deal was confirmed on Tuesday.
Speaking to Town’s media team after signing his deal at SN1, Wakeling said: “I’m really pleased to be here and cannot wait to get started.
“After speaking to the manager I knew this was the club for me. The way he wants his side to play really suits me with an attacking focus. I’m hungry and cannot wait to show the fans what I can do.
“This is a great club and Scott (Lindsey) is building a really talented young side, so I want to work hard, give it my all and most importantly, score goals.”
Meanwhile, head coach, Scott Lindsey, said: “Jacob is really good young player with great energy and a real drive to succeed here.
“He’s a player we kept close tabs on last season and he’s a real talent that will make people sit up and take notice. His work rate is fantastic and he’s a goal scorer.”
Wakeling featured 12 times for Leicester City Under-23s last season and scored three goals - one of which came against Fleetwood Town in the EFL Trophy - before failing to notch in a four-game spell at League Two Barrow.
Wakeling began his career at West Bromwich Albion’s academy, scoring four goals in 39 appearances, before dropping down to non-league football two years ago.
The 20-year-old then netted seven goals in eight games for Southern League Premier Division Central side Alvechurch which earned him a trial at Leicester under Brendan Rodgers.
His opportunities were extremely limited at the King Power stadium though, and Wakeling opted to let his contract run down before pursuing a contract at Swindon.
