Swindon Town have announced the signing of Liverpool defender Tom Clayton for an undisclosed fee.
The 21-year-old centre-back, who can also play in midfield, has yet to make a first team appearance at Anfield, but is the captain of their under-23 side.
Clayton had his Liverpool contract extended in April 2021 and went on to make his debut for Scotland under-21s two months later.
Clayton said to Swindon’s media team ahead of joining: “I’m so pleased to join Swindon. Having spoken to a number of people about the club before signing I knew this was the place I wanted to play my football and take the next step in my career, so it wasn’t a hard decision at all.
“I’m itching to get started and push myself hard here. I want to become a first team regular and show the fans what I’m about.
“This is a great club with superb ambition, and I really want to be part of this exciting project moving forward.”
Head coach Scott Lindsey said of the addition to his squad: “Tom has great talent and this is a fantastic signing for the football club.
“He’s come from one of the top academies in the country and worked with some top coaches, so he brings with him a real understanding of the game at such a young age, and he’s also very versatile which gives us options.”
Technical Director Sandro Di Michele was similarly excited with the signing: ““Tom is an excellent defender and comes to us from Liverpool who have developed him well. He was captain there last season for their Under-23s so also has great leadership qualities.
“He’s represented Scotland’s Under-21s so comes with experience of international football, so he’ll add so much to our squad as the new season fast approaches.”
