AT TIMES, Clem Morfuni’s first year as owner of Swindon Town has felt like a mammoth Netflix drama series.
There have been more than a few unforgettable highs and a just a couple of painful lows along the way, but the Australian has ultimately helped guide Swindon back to a relative serenity rarely seen by fans.
From the despair of July 2021 to the all-round optimism of 12 months later, Morfuni’s impact on Swindon – both as a club and as a town – has been extraordinary.
The man himself is, of course, far more modest when assessing his time as custodian of Swindon Town and says a complete team effort has led to the resurgence of “our great club.”
Morfuni said: “It’s gone really quick, but I’ve had plenty of good times.
“From sitting with the supporters away at Scunthorpe for our first game to playing Man City, and even playing football with the fans on a Wednesday night.
“Even bringing some kids who have never been on the County Ground pitch with their parents, that has been great. Just little things like that have made it really special.
“I want to thank all the supporters, the staff, the players, everybody at Swindon has been terrific. I want to thank them personally for all the support that they’ve given me to get where we are today.
“Hopefully, we can keep pushing things forward, and we will.”
Morfuni is not someone who likes to stand still or admire his good work though, Town’s owner continues to have more than one eye on the future and building his club back up to where he sees it belonging.
With the County Ground purchase well underway and some ambitious ideas regarding the academy in the pipeline, as well as plans to improve the infrastructure for the men’s and women’s teams, Morfuni hopes July 2023 will allow him to look back on an even better second 12 months.
He said: “We’ve achieved a lot, but there is still a lot of work to do and I’m still looking to the future.
“We’ve built the foundations now, but it’s about building on that now and making sure we keep pushing.
“I hope all of the supporters are proud of the club that we’ve got. I want them to be proud.
“But look, we’re always going to be striving for promotion. We’re always striving to make the club a better club.
“Hopefully, by this time next year we’ll have all the debts sorted, we’ll own the ground, and hopefully we can start the development of the ground and building up the academy.
“And hopefully we can get out of this league, that’s the aim.”
