PAUL Burke spent the whole of Saturday night with a grin on his face after his side ended their miserable form in style - with a 2-1 win over league leaders Easington Sports in the Hellenic League Division One West.
Goals in either half from Terry Moore and Lee Stoddart helped Bassett to their first league victory since the start of December, and Burke believes it showed exactly what his side are capable of.
"We thoroughly deserved it and got our just rewards for a good performance," he admitted.
"The club was a good place to be on Saturday. It was great for everyone involved, and I've forgotten what it's like to enjoy myself on a Saturday night.
"Their manager said he couldn't believe where we are in the league, but I told him that's been the story of our season.
"It goes to show we can do it, and to beat the team who are top gives us great encouragement.
"If we can perform like that until the end of the season then we'll win more games than we lose.
"We're looking up a little bit now. We're looking to close the gap a bit but it's only one step on the ladder and it's important we build on it."
Bassett got off to the best possible start when, with just three minutes on the clock, Neil Matthews flicked on a long kick from keeper Sean Purcell, and Terry Moore shrugged off his marker before slotting home from 12 yards.
Six minutes before the break, Easington striker Mike Spaull prodded home an equaliser from James Hastie's free-kick, But in the 73rd minute Bassett grabbed a deserved winner when Stoddart finished John Magani's cross at the far post.
In other games, Malmesbury Victoria recorded their second win in three with a shock victory over Winterbourne United.
New signing Paul Day grabbed the only goal with five minutes remaining to claim all three points and help the Vics' battle for survival.
Purton suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of high-flyers Old Woodstock Town, while Cirencester United went down 3-0 to Headington Amateurs.
