TWO goals in four minutes from second-half substitutes saw Supermarine snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in a frantic finale at Butlin Road.

Trailing 1-0 to hosts Rugby with just 14 minutes to play, Mark Draycott brought Marine level and then winger David Stroud smashed home a dramatic late winner from 20 yards.

The goal sparked wild celebrations among the players and staff in the visitors' dug-out, who just minutes earlier were scratching their heads in disbelief as Marine hit the post, crossbar and saw the ball cleared off the line all in the space of 10 seconds.

The afternoon began in equally frustrating fashion for Mark Collier and his players, who arrived at the ground at 2.50pm after the coach driver took a wrong turn in Rugby town centre.

The game eventually got underway at 3.10pm, and just 30 seconds later the home side had scored - the Marine players looking like they were still on the bus.

David Staff's inswinging corner dropped to the unmarked Rory Curtis, and the on-loan Walsall striker poked the ball home from six yards.

Curtis ran the show in the first half, and would have had a hat-trick if not for the heroics of Tom King in the visitors' goal.

Chris Thompson went close to an equaliser with a header from Kyle Lapham's free-kick, but Rugby goalkeeper Richard Anstiss was equal to the test.

Seconds later Cedric Abraham was fortunate to avoid a sending off when he appeared to hold back Curtis who was through on goal.

Marine survived until half-time without further damage, but there was little indication of the turnaround to follow.

Chris Taylor was seeing more of the ball in midfield, and it was his thumping 30-yard drive that produced a flying save from Anstiss.

The returning Leigh Henry almost equalised with a towering header from Taylor's teasing cross.

Somehow, Anstiss turned the ball onto the crossbar, and then Ashley Edenborough's follow-up hit the post before the ball was hacked to safety.

Marine got the goal they deserved on 76 minutes. Draycott, on for injured Jason Welch, got in behind the Rugby defence and slotted the ball past Anstiss at the second time of asking.

Four minutes later the turnaround was complete. Lapham's misplaced pass dropped perfectly for Stroud, who smashed the ball into the top corner from just outside the box.

Manager Mark Collier was thrilled with the win, Marine's sixth away from Hunts Copse in the Premier Division this season.

He said: "In the first half Tom King and Chris Thompson kept us in the game.

"We dominated the second half. I thought we were unfortunate not to score before we did.

"When you hit the post, the crossbar and have the cleared off the line all in the space of 10 seconds you think it's not going to be your day.

"But we stuck at it, kept passing the ball and took our chances when they came.

"It was a long journey here, but it will be a much happier one going home."
