SUPERMARINE moved to within three points of the Premier Division play-offs after Ashley Edenborough's courageous lob was enough to sink battling Cheshunt.
Edenborough put his body on the line as he glided in front of the sprawling Nedjet Hussein to dink home the winner just nine minutes from time.
It was no more than Mark Collier's side deserved, as they safely dodged the divots in the Hunts Copse surface to record a third successive Southern League victory.
With struggling Bedford Town due in Swindon on Tuesday night, Collier knows his side have a real chance to keep the momentum going.
He said: "This was a big game for us in the scheme of things.
"Three points was the only criteria and we achieved that.
"This was one of the games this season when we were favourites to win.
"We told the lads before the game that Cheshunt would beat teams before the end of the season, let's just not let it be us.
"We showed a bit of character today.
"At 1-1 it would have been easy to go into our shell, but we kept pressing for the winner.
"Now we have to build on this and take our positive attitude into Tuesday night."
The match was easy on the eye in the first half, with both sides trying to get the ball down and pass it on a difficult pitch.
Chris Taylor was again influential in the Marine midfield, and his neat touch and awareness held the key to unlocking the Cheshunt defence.
The hosts dominated the opening 20 minutes, with top scorer Richard Kear and captain Kyle Lapham both going close.
But it was Cheshunt who wasted a glorious chance to open the scoring against the run of play when Darrell Cox was awarded a fortuitous penalty.
Cox looked confident as he placed the ball down on the spot, but Marine goalkeeper Tom King made an excellent save low to his right.
Three minutes later the home side were ahead.
Gary Horgan's outswinging corner was headed goalwards by Edenborough, and Kear glanced the ball home past an unsighted Hussein.
The game turned scrappy after the break and that suited Cheshunt, who looked every bit the side destined to suffer the indignity of relegation.
The visitors were thrown a lifeline when Alex Martin's deflected effort looped over the unfortunate King, and Cox was on hand to prod home from close range.
Collier introduced Sean Wood for the injured Taylor, and the game changed in an instant.
Taylor passed the creative baton to his teenage counterpart, and Wood took up the running with some crafty touches in midfield.
It was his concise pass that allowed Kear to help the ball into Edenborough's path and the former Fairford man lobbed home the winner from 12 yards.
Afterwards, Wood's brief but influential cameo drew praise from his delighted manager.
Collier said: "Sean was excellent when he came on today. He's only a young lad, but he loves to pass the ball.
"He's been patient and we've been monitoring his progress with Swindon College.
"He's always a threat whenever he comes on and he's taken his chance today."
