SWINDON Town head coach Scott Lindsey said Harry McKirdy’s switch to Hibernian was “good business” for the Wiltshire club and the right time for the striker to move on.
After weeks of speculation and alleged interest from other clubs, McKirdy eventually sealed a move to Easter Road under Lee Johnson late on deadline day.
Having travelled up to Edinburgh on Wednesday night with a view to signing a three-year contract, a late disagreement between Town and Hibs threatened to pull the plug on the deal.
However, with hours remaining on Thursday, the move was resurrected and McKirdy was able to complete his transfer.
Many Swindon fans were understandably disappointed to see the 25-year-old depart, but Town’s head coach suggested McKirdy’s departure came at the right time for both parties.
Lindsey said: “Harry came in on a free after being on trial last season, and he did really well.
“We worked with him, developed him further, but the club had to do the deal. It was good business for us.
“I feel Harry needed to move on and do what he does best. Maybe his time was up at Swindon, and I wish him all the best for the future.
“But I’m really pleased with the squad overall. I think we did some good business on the final day, so I’m really pleased.”
Two days after McKirdy’s protracted exit was completed, Town badly struggled to create and finish off their chances in a 0-0 draw away at Gillingham.
The stalemate marked the second time in two matches in which Town had failed to take three points against an opposition with 10 men.
Speaking post-match at Priestfield Stadium, Lindsey admitted the latest draw left him with an extremely sour taste in his mouth.
He said: “We’ve got to turn these games into wins. The last two draws should have been six points, simple as that.
“We did enough against Stockport to win the game, but we concede off a set-piece late on against 10 men and we dropped two points.
“Against Gillingham, we don’t concede but we play for 80 minutes against 10 men and we should win the game.
“It feels like we’ve had a kick in the teeth twice, but they’re two away games which we can take a point as a positive in many ways. But we should win both games.”
