IF YOU’VE ever wondered what a technical director does at a football club on a daily basis, speculate no more.

Swindon Town’s Sandro Di Michele spoke to Adver Sport about some of his tasks and responsibilities now that the summer transfer window has closed and his primary role as the club’s head of recruitment can take something of a back seat.

Despite what some may think, the former Wigan Athletic recruitment analyst does not spend the next three months on a golf course in Dubai, counting down the days until January 1 before springing back into action.

Instead, he can be doing anything from scrupulously reading scouting reports to feeding back an array of statistical information to the club’s first-team coaching set-up.

In the days after Town moved to their highest position of the season – eighth – Di Michele revealed he had sat down with Scott Lindsey and his coaching staff to delve into where even marginal improvements can be made in the coming days and weeks.

He said: “I’ve just sat down with Scott and the coaching staff and gone through a big statistical review of our first 10 league games of the season.

“So we look at what we’re doing in and out of possession, how we’re performing from set-pieces, where we’re vulnerable, where we can improve. That’s a big piece of work for me, and that’s something I’ve been working on for the past three days.

“That’s really important because we can look at where we currently rank in the league, our percentage chances of finishing in various positions – that’s something I’ll update on a regular basis.”

Aside from the bread and butter of data and analysis, Di Michele shared an overview of a handful of his other regular jobs.

He said: “We’ve got our scouts out and about, so I’m reading through scout reports. And I’m doing a presentation now because in October we’re going to have a big review of the transfer window as a whole.

“I’ll sit down with the medical team to find out about our players’ mental state. We’ve got a fairly big squad, and players are in and out of the squad, so you’ve got to be mindful of how everyone is doing.

“We’ve got a player at the moment who we’re arranging to spend a bit of time with a performance mindset coach, for example.

“We’ve also got five lads out on loan, so I’ve got to make sure we’re getting scout reports and all the physical data on them.

“And then on Tuesday night I went to go and watch Banbury United v Gloucester City because we had three players in action in that game. So there’s huge variety in what I do day-to-day.”
