SWINDON Town head coach Scott Lindsey felt his side’s performance against Stevenage was the worst they have produced all season.
Town saw 70 per cent of the ball, won seven corners, and produced 10 shots, but none of that resulted in a shot on target as the Robins slipped to a 2-0 defeat at the Lamex Stadium.
Jordan Roberts struck once from close range in the early stages of both halves to send Stevenage top of the table, while Swindon dropped to 10th courtesy of the club’s third League Two defeat.
Post-match, the Town boss was incredibly disappointed to see his players fail to reach the high standards they have regularly met so far this season.
Reacting to the 2-0 defeat, Lindsey said: “We’ve got to play our way against Stevenage, and we didn’t.
“It’s probably the worst we’ve been, which is disappointing because I really backed us. I felt we could come to Stevenage and get something.
“I felt we got into good areas but made the wrong decisions at vital times. That’s disappointing too because we’ve been good in the final third this season.
“I think we’ve made good choices, I think we’ve opened teams up at times, and we’ve created goal-scoring opportunities.
“I don’t think we had a shot on target today. I don’t think their goalkeeper had anything to do all day, so that’s disappointing.”
Town’s loss to Boro means Lindsey’s men have only beaten one other team in the current top 10 in League Two, having played six of them in their opening 13 games (lost two, drawn three).
Swindon’s head coach insists his team’s prospects are far brighter than the early pattern suggests and suggested the abject display against Stevenage was nothing more than an anomaly.
Asked if the underwhelming record against potential promotion rivals was a worry, Lindsey said: “It's not a concern, no.
“I trust and believe in the squad that I’ve got. We’ve performed in every game, and we’ve been competitive in every game. Against Stevenage, we weren’t.
“I think we were competitive at least, we huffed and puffed, but we didn’t have any real spark or quality in the final third.
“They’re top of the table for a reason. They’re very different to us, but they’re very good at what they do, so we’ve got to give them some credit.
“I still think we had good moments where we got in good areas, but we didn’t make those moments count as much as we have done in past games.”
