HARRY Williams netted a stoppage-time equaliser on Saturday as Swindon Supermarine drew 1-1 away to Chesham United in Southern League Premier South.
A tight game appeared to be heading for a 0-0 stalemate before the hosts nudged in front inside the final 10 minutes.
But Marine – who were without manager Lee Spalding due to illness – dug deep and managed to gain a reward courtesy of their in-form striker, Williams.
A cagey first half featured very few chances for either side – only an injury to Chesham forward Ricky German around the half-hour mark broke up a slow first 45.
Charlie Griffin-led Marine were happy enough with their opening efforts, and they maintained control until the final 20 minutes – where gap started to appear due to tiring legs on a heavy pitch.
Chesham almost took the lead after Karl Oliyide played a one-two around the edge of the box before watching his effort strike the post and bounce away.
Moments later, Ryan Campbell’s flashing ball across goal reached Williams’ studs but the latter was unable to divert the ball home.
Inside the final 15 minutes, Marine captain Mat Liddiard heroically blocked a shot on the line as Chesham ramped up the pressure on their visitors’ goal.
Marine goalkeeper Josh Gould tipped a shot over the top minutes before the visitors felt they should have been awarded a penalty for a foul on Williams.
It appeared as though it would not be the Wiltshire side’s day after a free-kick, allegedly awarded for a foul not too dissimilar to the one not given on Williams, was headed past Gould by Jeanmal Prosper in the 85th minute.
But, deep into injury time, Marine found an equaliser. Williams found himself goal-side of the defence before showing impressive skill to beat the one remaining defender and loop it over United’s goalkeeper to rescue a point.
Meanwhile, in Southern League Division One Central, Highworth Town secured a 2-0 victory over top-six outfit Biggleswade in Bedfordshire.
Playing at the home of Bedford Town, the Worthians went in front midway through the first half when Felipe Barcelos was brought down in the area – the striker then picked himself up to roll the spot-kick home.
In the second half, Swindon Town loanee Anton Dworzak thundered a 25-yard strike into the top corner to complete a fine afternoon for Gareth Davies’ men.
Royal Wootton Bassett Town made it a positive weekend for all the Wiltshire sides after securing a 2-2 draw against Worcester Raiders in the Hellenic League Premier Division.
Worcester – who fielded a West Bromwich Albion loanee in the team – twice went ahead in the pair’s first ever meeting, but Landon Golding netted the initial equaliser before Matt Jones scored a long-range free-kick in the 87th minute to share the spoils for Sam Collier’s men.
