SWINDON Town has been given an idea of how much money the club will receive from FIFA for their current and former players being called to represent their respective countries at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
Town saw their only current player, Jonny Williams, called up by Wales on Wednesday night to become just the fourth player in the club’s history to head to a World Cup while still under contract at the County Ground.
Meanwhile, ex-stopper Jojo Wollacott is expected to be included in Ghana’s final 26-man squad on Tuesday, November 15 alongside Brighton and Hove Albion’s Tariq Lamptey, Leicester City’s Daniel Amartey, and Arsenal’s Thomas Partey.
FIFA will distribute more than 200 million US dollars to clubs whose players participate in the World Cup in Qatar this winter.
The game’s global governing body confirmed details of its club benefits programme last month, announcing 209 million dollars (around £189million) had been set aside.
FIFA anticipates that the scheme will mean a payment of 10,000 US dollars (just over £9,000) per player for each day he remains with his national team at the World Cup itself and during the official preparation period.
The more participants a club have, and how far each of those players progresses in the tournament, will determine the final amount a club can claim.
Any club that a player has been registered with in the two years prior to the World Cup will be eligible for a share of the daily pay-out.
Therefore, with both Williams and Wollacott likely to play their final games on Saturday before heading out to meet up with their respective countries, Swindon could be in line to land at least £150,000 from the two players’ World Cup call-ups.
Williams, whose Town contract expires at the end of this season, is likely to play his last game for a while on Saturday when Town host Tranmere Rovers at the County Ground.
The 29-year-old will then definitely miss Swindon’s League Two home game with Crewe Alexandra on Saturday, November 19.
Depending on Wales’ fortunes, Williams could miss an away trip to Crawley Town on Saturday, December 3 as well as a home game against AFC Wimbledon a week later and a fixture against Barrow at Holker Street on the day before the final - December 17.
