AFTER Swindon Town were dumped out of the FA Cup last weekend, head coach Scott Lindsey hopes the clarity of his side’s fixture list will make a League Two promotion push all the more viable.

Town were beaten 4-0 by Stockport County in the only other competition available to the Robins last Saturday, leaving Lindsey’s men with a straightforward schedule of 29 league fixtures to play in the 2022-23 campaign.

With Swindon in sixth after just three defeats in 17 games, the Town boss believes his team is in the ideal position to go on and capitalise on their positive start.

Looking for the positives to take out of the club’s FA Cup wreckage, Lindsey said: “One thing we said after last week was: “we know where we are now and what we’ve got to do.”

“We know how many games we have left this season. There is nothing else to focus on other than League Two and the 29 games we have left. And we will be setting up to win all 29 games.

“Looking at what we achieved last year, we had 22 wins, which mean we’ll need to win 14 out of the last 29 to match that. When you look at it that way, is it doable? Of course it is.

“We’ve put ourselves in a really, really good position. But I think we’ll certainly need more than that to get into the top three, and I think we’ll probably need more to get in the play-offs this year.”

Lindsey hopes the first of Town’s 14 victories will come against an out-of-sorts Tranmere Rovers at the County Ground on Saturday.

Micky Mellon’s side have failed to win any of their last five in all competitions, although they have drawn three in a series of low-scoring affairs.

With Tranmere losing twice to Carlisle United in recent weeks – including in the FA Cup last Saturday – Lindsey knows both sides will be looking to recover quickly but hopes his team’s more encouraging recent league form will help achieve the desired result.

Previewing the Tranmere fixture, Lindsey said: “This game is very important. I know it’s a cliché and a lot of managers say it, but the most important game is the next one.

“We’ve prepared for this one in good detail, as we normally would, because we want to get back on the horse as quickly as possible.

“We want to get out there and perform as we know we can as quickly as possible to win all three points.

“If you look at the atmosphere around the place, it’s very, very positive – even after a bad result last weekend in the cup, it’s a very positive place to be.”
