UNCERTAINTY continues to surround the head-coach situation at Swindon Town following a day of silence out of the County Ground.
Over 24 hours after reports first emerged that Town boss Scott Lindsey had left SN1, there has yet to be confirmation one way or the other over the future of the 50-year-old.
Fans have been left to speculate at what might have caused the alleged decision to take place, who initiated it, as well as who might take over should Lindsey be confirmed as having exited.
Despite Swindon winning only two of their past nine games, the claims of Lindsey’s departure still came as something of a surprise to many.
Especially after the recent return of Robins legend Charlie Austin on a six-month contract, and the unanimous call from supporter groups to ‘Pack The County Ground’ for the striker’s potential second debut against Grimsby Town on Saturday, January 14.
Highly-esteemed football journalist Pete O’Rourke first reported that the Town boss had departed Wiltshire on Thursday afternoon, days after the Robins’ 1-0 defeat to struggling Colchester United.
Later on Thursday, O’Rourke stated that Lindsey was “set for the vacant manager’s job at Crawley Town after leaving Swindon” and “had been interviewed” by the owners of the Red Devils already.
But while neither Crawley or Swindon were able to quiet or confirm the rumours in the hours that followed, Sky Sports News said on Friday afternoon that the People’s Pension Stadium club had contacted Brentford B assistant coach Sam Saunders over their vacant manager’s position.
Sky Sports News revealed that Saunders was on Crawley’s managerial shortlist before they appointed their third boss of the season, Matt Etherington in November.
Etherington was in charge for just three games – which included a 2-0 victory at home to Swindon – but left after just 34 days at the helm.
Crawley director of football and interim CEO Chris Galley said: “It became clear to all involved parties that this partnership is not the right fit to carry the club forward and achieve our goals.”
Swindon remained tight-lipped over the future of the club’s head coach after being approached by Adver Sport late on Friday.
Town do not have a game this weekend due to Stevenage’s FA Cup third-round clash away at Premier League Aston Villa. The League Two fixture has been rearranged for Tuesday, January 24.
