SWINDON Town club captain Angus MacDonald has left the club and joined Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen on a short-term permanent deal.

The 30-year-old only joined Swindon on a two-year contract back in July last year following his release from Rotherham United and was promptly given the armband under Scott Lindsey for the 2022-23 campaign.

MacDonald made 16 appearances for Town after signing but missed a significant period prior to Christmas with a hamstring injury.

Reports had emerged earlier in January that Town were looking to move MacDonald on, with Bristol Rovers and Burton Albion said to be at the front of the queue to land the experienced centre-back.

But the Winchester-born man has moved up to Scotland to join seventh-place Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership after the Dons confirmed he was released by Swindon.

In a brief statement from Town, the club said: "We would like to take this opportunity to thank Angus for all his efforts here at the football club during his time with us, and wish him all the very best for the future."

Dons interim manager, Barry Robson, said in an Aberdeen statement announcing the news: “Angus has played an abundance of games at a high level down south and brings with him a wealth of experience which I think will be hugely beneficial to us in the second part of the season.

“He’s been captain at many of his clubs and I’ve no doubt his leadership will be invaluable.”

Aberdeen revealed that MacDonald trained with the squad on Tuesday in preparation for their match against St Mirren on Wednesday and will be available for selection.
