SWINDON Town head coach Jody Morris believes it is “scandalous” that midfielder Saidou Khan was the only player punished with a post-match red card against Salford City last weekend.

In video footage shown to Adver Sport by Morris, there appears to be clear evidence of Salford substitute Matthew Lund committing multiple violent-conduct offences against the Gambian late on in the 2-1 Town win.

Lund looks to have stamped on Khan at least twice in separate incidents around the 87th minute, while a hand goes into the throat of the Swindon midfielder moments before the Town man reacts to one of the lunges.

Referee Will Finnie and his officials missed all of the flair-ups at the time, and Khan was the only player to be punished retrospectively by the FA – consequently accepting the charge of violent conduct and with it a five-game ban.

Explaining the situation from Swindon’s point of view, Morris said: “[Kahn] is actually being punished for raising his hand.

“He hasn’t hit anybody, he hasn’t clenched his fist or punched anyone. It’s a reaction from him being stamped on, which I think we all would do if you’re underneath someone’s studs.

“If someone has stamped on you, you would react to help get them off. But the fact that his hand is up by the side of Matthew Lund’s face, the FA say it’s violent conduct.

“Having shown you guys the video, I think it’s fair to say there is violent conduct from the other side multiple times in the build-up, and nothing at all has happened.”

During Morris’ monologue, the Town boss did not dispute Khan’s reaction warranting a red card and revealed the 27-year-old had been punished internally for his third red card of the season.

Morris said Khan was “extremely apologetic” over the incident but also “baffled” as to why he was the only one being punished.

The Town boss said: “I’m annoyed with Saidou because he’s reacted to someone who got exactly what he was hoping for, and he needs to get better at that because if you become a target because people know then you might react, you’re taking yourself out of games.

“But there is no excuse for what Lund was doing to Saidou in the build-up and even after that incident. For me, it’s scandalous that Saidou is the only one getting banned.

“As much as I’m annoyed with Saidou’s reaction, it is one where any of us sitting around this table would struggle not to react when someone is stamping on you multiple times, antagonising you, grabbing you by your throat, pushing you in your throat.

“It’s a poor reaction from Saidou, but I think a lot of people may have reacted a lot earlier than even Saidou did.”
