SWINDON Town head coach Jody Morris believes if the club were to reach the League Two play-offs in May, it would be “a huge success” given what he has had to deal with since arriving.
After being appointed in late January, Morris has led Swindon to seven points from a possible 18 and 11th in the table, but all without an assistant coach and a luckless spate of injuries which has withered his squad.
Town could move up to ninth and be a single point away from the top seven if they win both games in hand over many teams around them.
But before that, the Robins must take on a Carlisle United outfit which is not only a direct rival for promotion but in sparkling form since the turn of the year.
With between 21-24 points likely needed to repeat last season’s play-off quest, Morris believes wins over Town’s rivals are not vital but would certainly help.
He said: “Trying to map it out the exact way is difficult, but if we were to make the play-offs in any way, shape, or form, I think it would be a huge, huge success considering what we’ve had to deal with.
“But in answer to your question, I don’t care who we beat and how we do it, if we were to get there that would be enough for me. And then your prep starts again to try and go up.
“At the moment, it’s a case of taking every game as it comes. We’re preparing for a really good Carlisle side, and I think we’ll probably have to play a little bit better than we have done in our home games under me so far to get a result.”
Morris went on to admit that very few people expected Town to take a point from Orient last weekend, therefore predictions are futile when attempting to say where the club will end up.
Swindon’s head coach is simply aiming to win as many games as he can as quickly as possible in order to simplify the mathematical equations for all.
He said: “We’ve all seen in previous seasons teams that creep in through the back door late on.
“But I do believe the beauty of our country as a whole – up and down the leagues – is the competitive nature of it lends itself to a few surprises.
“So even when you try and map out what you should need – and your maths is fantastic there – it can be skewed by the fourth game in that sequence, for example.
“Personally, I would lean towards saying if we can get the right performances which translate into the right results, we’ll give ourselves the best chance against whoever we play.”
