SWINDON Town spent almost £56,000 on agents fees and deals over the past year, new information from the Football Association has revealed.
The FA this week released the list detailing how much clubs in all four professional leagues spent on intermediaries and transactions for the 12 months from February 1, 2022 to the end of the January transfer window in 2023.
Town’s significant output was £13,000 less than the previous year – when the Robins paid almost £70,000 in agents’ fees during 2021-22.
In the aforementioned period, Swindon signed 27 new players while four current squad members agreed fresh terms. Two academy products – George Cowmeadow and Harrison Minturn – penned their first professional deals, adding to the club’s spend.
Town found themselves smack bang in the middle of the pack for output in League Two, having spent under a quarter of table-topping Stockport County’s mammoth effort.
The ambitious Hatters, who are targeting back-to-back promotions, splashed out almost a quarter of a million pounds in their transition year from winning the National League.
That figure is – remarkably – around double what Salford City, who are the next highest team on the list, paid.
Swindon’s Good Friday opponents Mansfield Town (£116,902), final-day opposition Crawley Town (£114,445), and League Two leaders Leyton Orient (£105,768) make up the top five.
In contrast, Crewe Alexandra spent just £15,585, Newport County paid £22,511, and Gillingham shelled out £26,550.
These numbers are worlds apart from the money spent in the Premier League, however, with clubs having paid almost £320million over the past 12 months.
The £318.2million paid to intermediaries was up from £272.6million the previous year. Manchester City paid the most for one team - £51.56million – with the period including the signing of Norwegian striker Erling Haaland.
Chelsea, who made 15 significant signings, including loans, are the next highest at £43.16million. Liverpool paid £33.69million and Manchester United £24.73million.
Of the current Premier League clubs, Nottingham Forest paid the least amount in agents' fees at just £4.35million, despite signing more players than any other top-flight club across the last two transfer windows.
