SWINDON Supermarine maintained their Southern League Premier South play-off push courtesy of a 3-0 victory at home to Plymouth Parkway on Wednesday night.
In a game where Marine were second best for the majority, Harry Williams sustained his remarkable season for the club by scoring his 34th of the campaign in a Parkway-dominated first 45.
While the Devon club continued to look the more dangerous after half-time, an inspired substitution by Blues’ boss Lee Spalding resulted in Marine finishing the game off late on through two goals from Joe Tumelty.
The Swindon outfit are sixth in the table – three points off fifth-place Poole Town – with a vital clash against Bracknell Town to come on Saturday.
With new goalkeeper Charlie Searle making his debut for Marine, it was Parkway who began the brighter, although they could not produce an early shot on target.
Home midfielder, Zack Kotwica was instead the first to test either stopper as he zipped an effort off the surface in the 10th minute, but Jordan Duffey was behind it to claim.
More Parkway pressure was applied, but in the 20th minute Spalding’s men took the lead. A slick team move featuring Williams, Kotwica, and Ryan Campbell ended with the former slamming in the latter’s low cross.
Just a couple of minutes later, it could have been two after James Harding found space on the edge of the box, but his strike thumped the post and diverted away.
Plymouth dominated the remainder of the first half as they sought an equaliser, and Marine had Williams to thank for their visitors not finding one as he cleared off the line from Callum Rose.
The second half started as the first ended with the visitors piling on the pressure. As a result, Spalding opted for a double substitution in the 55th minute – a decision which turned out to pay dividends late on – with Brad Hooper replacing George Dowling and Tumelty coming on for Williams.
Plymouth thought they had equalised midway through the second half, but the goal was ruled out for a push on Ty Duffus.
As time kicked on, and after a golden chance was wasted by the visitors, Marine made it two when a mix-up in the Plymouth defence allowed Tumelty to seize on a loose ball and slam the ball into the unguarded net.
As Parkway pushed once more, Harding was denied one-on-one after a swift counter-attack prior to Tumelty’s second and Marine’s third in the dying embers.
The resulting corner was half-cleared out to the Marine substitute, and Tumelty took a touch before burying his shot past Duffey from the edge of the area.
