Swindon Town head coach Jody Morris has wished his friend and former teammate Frank Lampard well after the latter was recently appointed by Chelsea.

Morris has been in charge of EFL League Two side Swindon since the end of January but prior to arriving in Wiltshire, the coach had both played and managed at Stamford Bridge.

Between 1996 and 2003, the Town head coach turned out for Chelsea having been promoted from the club’s youth academy and played with the likes of Gianfranco Zola, John Terry and of course, Lampard.

He later linked up with Lampard again as both hung up their boots and started to pursue roles in coaching, with Morris becoming Lampard’s managerial assistant at both Derby County and Chelsea.

The pair parted professional ways after Lampard was sacked from the Premier League club in January of 2021.

Lampard was announced as interim Chelsea manager on Thursday, taking over from Graham Potter until the end of the season.

The Adver asked Morris, who is a Chelsea fan, for his thoughts on the recent appointment made by the Blues.

“I’ve spoken to Frank since he’s gone back in there and obviously I want him to do really well as it is my club too and I will always support them,” he said.

“He’s a mucker and a close friend of mine and I want him to do well.”

Despite hoping for the best for his former teammate, Morris was keen to assert that his full focus remains on Swindon.

“If I’m being honest, I’ve got more important things to be worried about than Chelsea and what is going on over there at the moment,” he added.

“I didn’t watch the game [a 1-0 loss away to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League] so I think that probably tells you where I am at.”

The Robins fell to a 4-2 loss to Mansfield Town on Good Friday in their most recent match, leaving fans disgruntled at the County Ground.

Friday’s defeat is the latest disappointment in a run of poor results as Town are currently on a winless streak of seven matches, including four losses.

This has only added to head coach Jody Morris’ woes who has won just two games since his appointment on Deadline Day in January.

The next game for Morris’ side comes on Monday with a trip to Prenton Park to face Tranmere Rovers in League Two.

Kick-off is scheduled for 3pm as Swindon look to turnaround its recent form and bounce back in preparation for the final sprint of the season.
