SWINDON TOWN head coach Jody Morris has ensured that although preparation for next season is underway, his focus remains on finishing off the 2022/23 campaign as strongly as possible.
Town’s faint hopes of clinching the League Two play-offs were crushed following their recent disappointing form, having suffered four losses on the spin and without a win since February 25th.
Sat in 12th with six games to go, a mid-table finish seems inevitable for the Wiltshire side, with head coach Morris having only won two out of his 13 games in charge since he took over in January.
There may not be too much riding on Town’s remaining games, but Morris stressed the importance of turning around their form as the season draws to a close.
Speaking to Adver Sport, the Swindon boss said: “If we weren’t in such a poor run of form then perhaps, I’d be using these final games to try a few things and experiment.
“I get that people might think that with our League position, we would have more of an eye on next season not care too much about these las six games.
“But it’s more important for the players confidence, the supporters and the club as a whole to finish off this season strongly and improve the results.
“All I’m focused on at the minute is what’s in front of us, and working hard to change our fortunes.”
11 Swindon players will be out of contract at the end of the season, including regular starters Jonny Williams and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy.
Also, loanees Sol Brynn, Ciaran Brennan, Dylan Kadji, Luke Jephcott, and Joe Tomlinson will all be returning to their respective parent clubs in the summer, although the latter two do have options in their contract to sign on permanently with Town.
Morris admitted that a player’s future with the club being uncertain could impact his team selection, but cares more about winning the remaining games.
“I think sometimes when there’s a debate over who to start in a position, if player A is leaving and player B is contracted, it comes into consideration.
“We’re in a period at the moment where getting results is pivotal, and winning matches is done by putting out your best squad available, even if that does include players who are leaving.”
“Turning around this form we’re in at the moment overrides everything else for me.”
