SWINDON SUPERMARINE secured a 2-1 victory against Yate Town in their final away game of the season, thanks to a late winner from Brad Hooper.
Despite Marine’s best efforts, their play-off dreams look to be over, requiring two Poole defeats and a goal difference swing of 13 to jump the dotted line.
With forward George Dowling nursing a thigh strain from the sides 2-1 victory over North Leigh on Monday, James Harding came into the starting line-up to replace him.
Manager Lee Spalding also dropped Henry Spalding to the bench, opting for the return of full back Will Tunnicliff, which allowed Ryan Campbell to play a more attacking role.
After starting brightly, it was Marine who broke the deadlock in the 20th minute as a result of some neat build up play.
An intelligent flick from Harding found Campbell in a dangerous position behind the Yate defence, and made no mistake as fired his effort into the bottom right corner to make it 1-0 and get his first league goal of the season.
The Wiltshire side thought they had a penalty just before the hour mark when Williams looked to be dragged down in the Yate box, but the appeals were waved away by referee Said Ouchene.
Yate began to grow into the game during the remainder of the first period, as Marine struggled to have any control of the midfield battle despite their lead.
The away side looked to be back in control of the match after some substitutions from boss Spalding, but out of nowhere in the 72nd minute, Yate were able to find an equaliser against the run of play.
A free kick was delivered into the box and found former Marine striker Kyle Tooze, who was able to tap in from point blank range past goalkeeper Charlie Searle to make things all square.
Drama then ensued in the 77th minute when Mat Liddiard’s strike looked to hit the arm of a Yate defender in the box, but the referee opted against giving Marine the spot kick.
Just moments after up the other end of the pitch, Yate felt they too should have had a penalty with shouts of a handball from Tyrone Duffus, yet again the man in the middle waved the claims away.
They left it late, but eventually Spalding’s men would find their deserved winner in the 89th minute through substitute Brad Hooper.
In the dying moments of the game, Marine had a corner desperately cleared away by Yate and into the feet of Hooper on the edge of the box, who struck a wonderful half volley into the top corner of the net, which secured his sides victory late on.
