HEAD coach Jody Morris hopes Swindon Town’s 5-1 win away at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday can help the players “believe in themselves a little bit more” as the Robins aim to end the season in style.
Aaron Pierre put an early dampener on Swindon’s day with an eighth-minute header, but Luke Jephcott scored a first-half brace – the first of which was from the spot – and Jacob Wakeling helped to complete the turnaround before the break with a pin-point header.
Tom Clayton’s first goal for the club made it four following a tricky spell at the start of the second period, and substitute Ronan Darcy sealed an emphatic scoreline from the spot in stoppage time after Pierre had been dismissed for handling on the line.
Post-match, Morris found plenty of positives to take.
He said: “I’m really pleased, but I’m more pleased for the lads to be honest because I think that will help us in the long run and it will help for the remaining games too, for them to believe in themselves a little bit more.
“I’m happy to enjoy the end of the game a little bit more, but I’m still sitting here annoyed at the 10-12 minutes at the start of the second half.
“But there are improvements, though, even from a defensive aspect. I know we’ve gifted them chances, but they were not the more obvious ones that we’ve been conceding of late.
“But I was pleased with us dealing with the more direct play, particularly from our centre-halves and our full-backs.”
REPORT: Jephcott double helps Town cruise past struggling Dons.
REACTION: Morris highlights Brynn performance in ruthless attacking display.
Victory extended Town’s unbeaten run to three games and made it consecutive wins, straight after a period where Swindon were seemingly unable to find success for love nor money.
Morris was choosing to remain level after the weekend win, though, stating the club’s journey is a process and progression will be gradual.
He said: “It’s never nice when you go on a two-game winless run, let alone however many it was. But all I can do is work with the players and improve them.
“I didn’t get too despondent after certain games when we didn’t get the result because there was something to be positive about.
“That’s probably another reason why I’m not jumping for joy, because there were still moments in that game where we could have done better.
“It’s a process, and at the moment, we’re coming out on the right side of that – and deservedly so.
“But I think if we’d got what we deserved over the period I’ve been here, we’d have a lot more points and be in a lot prettier position.”
