SWINDON Town head coach Jody Morris admits he is unsure where Jonny Williams’ future lies but confirmed conversations with the club’s board around budgets for next season will be taking place this week.

Williams sees his two-year contract expire in the summer and must negotiate a fresh deal with Town or say his goodbyes following a reasonably successful period from a personal point of view.

The Welshman has played 83 times for Swindon since arriving, scoring 15 goals and laying on 10 assists – all three categories feature the highest number in Williams’ career at any one club.

Discussing what he expects to happen to the 29-year-old moving forward, Morris appeared pessimistic in terms of Town’s chances of keeping him.

He said: “I had a bit of a chat with Jonny about his future. I spoke with Jonny quite a lot [on deadline day], but without going into detail, I think Jonny has got to make the best decision for him and where he’s at in his career at the moment.

Town head coach currently unsure of 2023-24 budget.

“I like Jonny, I’ve spoken with Jonny, but whether there’s anything to be done there or not, I’m not too sure.

“But looking at what we’re doing next year is obviously extremely important. There are conversations that need to be had and that are going on this week, but those conversations probably need to speed up a little bit.”

While Williams’ exit appears more likely than not, Morris revealed there are a handful of players with one-year extensions available to the club, reducing the chances of a total squad rebuild being required next term.

Rushian Hepburn-Murphy is said to have an option on his contract held by the club, as does George McEachran, Marcel Lavinier, and Tom Brewitt.

Charlie Austin’s future – like Williams – also remains up in the air, but Morris stated he would “absolutely” want to see the aforementioned quartet have their deals extended.

Morris said: “I would absolutely want to work with Rush next year. I’ve been really pleased with him; I like him as a kid.

“He’s still got a lot of potential to come, I think, especially when you know what he’s gone through with injuries.

“I believe, with Rush, that his [contract] is ready with an option [for another year] that’s ready to kick into gear.

“It’s the same with George McEachran, ones that we will absolutely be taking up. And Tom Brewitt as well.

“Those are the three who have options on them. But as far as anyone else goes, there’s no movement [on new contracts].”
