SWINDON Town head coach Jody Morris admitted there was “an all-too-familiar feeling” once Crewe Alexandra equalised late on in the Cheshire side’s 2-1 victory at Gresty Road on Saturday.
Town were in front at half-time thanks to Rushian Hepburn-Murphy’s 44th-minute solo run and deflected strike, only to be undone very late on as Crewe maintained their excellent recent home form.
Joel Tabiner netted a classy winner for the Alex four minutes from time, just moments after ex-Swindon midfielder Conor Thomas had pounced on Sol Brynn’s mistake to equalise.
Morris was quick to defend his stopper, though, and felt his defensive unit must react more efficiently in and around their own penalty area.
He said: “The goals are disappointing simply because we need to react better as defenders.
“The fella on the edge of the box has maybe got too long to get his shot off and then the fella who follows in is in acres of space to just tap it in.
“Sol hasn’t spilled many shots since I’ve been here. I said that to the lads after – he was the one who was great for us at 3-1 at AFC Wimbledon.
“But we need to make sure that, as defenders, they get into habits of following up rebounds like that.
“But it was an all-too-familiar feeling of “when we concede one, we kind of look all over the shop.””
MATCH REPORT: Crewe come from behind to beat Swindon late on.
Crewe’s turnaround was the fifth time Swindon have let a winning position slip inside the final 10 minutes in Morris’ 18-game tenure so far.
The Town boss was critical of his team’s overall play anyway, but had hoped Swindon would steal a result-clinching second.
Morris said: “It’s disappointing. I don’t think we were great in the second half, anyway. I don’t think we were great for the whole game.
“There were moments and a few passages of play throughout the game where I felt, once we did that, we could open them up and cause problems. But they were few and far between.
“There was an element of control in the first half, we hit the bar a couple of times and we scored the goal, but there were not many opportunities to extend the lead in the second half.”
