Swindon Town have announced former Walsall boss Michael Flynn will take over as their new manager.

The Welshman has signed a two-year contract with the Robins and will officially begin his role after the club’s final game of the season, against Crawley Town today.

Flynn has managed over 300 games in the division, including trips to two play-off finals with Newport.

He also recorded several impressive cup upsets at Newport, including victories over Leeds United and Leicester City.

The 42-year-old most recently held the reigns at Walsall, where he was sacked last month after one win in 20 league games.

He takes over from Jody Morris who parted company with Town after just 18 matches.

In a statement announcing the news, owner Clem Morfuni said: “We are delighted to announce Michael Flynn has agreed a deal with the club to take the role and lead us forward, signing a two-year contract.

“This was a thorough and fast-moving process as we had very specific requirements for this role, and Michael quickly became the leading candidate.

“We wanted to appoint a manager who is experienced at League Two level, and Michael’s knowledge of the current squad, the division itself and potential new recruits is very comprehensive and impressive.”

Morfuni added that Flynn has already identified the areas of the squad he wishes to strengthen to push for promotion.

He added: “If you look at his record in terms of win percentage, league finishes, cup runs and player sales with extremely limited resources, we feel he has done an excellent job on a consistent basis.

“He has the highest qualifications in the game as a holder of a UEFA Pro Licence with a clear identity of how he wants to play, along with a track record of developing and improving players, alongside his extensive contacts, knowledge and enthusiasm, we’re hoping he can add promotion with us to his CV.

“We feel we have the nucleus of a good young squad here, and by adding experience and leadership, we believe we can really challenge for promotion next season.

“We are convinced Michael is the right man to lead us and give us the best chance of achieving our goal, so please get behind him and the team next season and carry on supporting our great club, as you have since the day I arrived and a for a long time prior.”

Wayne Hatswell will join Flynn’s coaching team alongside Gavin Gunning and Steve Mildenhall.
