SWINDON Town loanee Sol Brynn has agreed a contract extension with parent club, Middlesbrough.
Brynn spent the entire 2022-23 season in Wiltshire and played each of Town’s League Two matches as well as their FA Cup defeat to Stockport County and two EFL Trophy games.
During his stay, the 22-year-old conceded 65 goals but kept an impressive 13 clean sheets to put himself in the reckoning for the Swindon Town Swindon Advertiser Player of the Season vote – of which he finished second behind flatmate Frazer Blake-Tracy.
The Middlesbrough man overcame a brief period of criticism from some fans early on in the season to become a well-liked and confident presence in the Town goal.
He claimed three Player of the Month awards – as voted for by the fans on Twitter – as well as a handful of man-of-the-match prizes.
As a result of a strong individual campaign, a handful of higher EFL and Premier League clubs were keeping tabs on Brynn with a view to potentially bolstering their goalkeeping ranks.
But with the young stopper’s contract due to expire in the summer of 2024, Boro were keen to tie the hometown man down to extended terms.
Around three weeks after reports emerged that Brynn would enter into negotiations with Middlesbrough over a new contract, it was confirmed the 22-year-old had agreed a two-year extension with the Championship club that will keep the goalkeeper on Teeside until 2026.
A former England U18 international who joined Boro's academy as a nine-year-old, Brynn also experienced senior football at Scottish club Queen of the South where he made 21 appearances on loan during the latter half of 2021.
It is believed that Brynn will be given a chance to fight for the number one jersey at the Riverside next season with Middlesbrough remaining in the Championship due to their play-off semi-final defeat to Coventry City.
Of the Teesiders’ other shot stoppers, number one Zack Steffen will shortly return to parent club Manchester City following 45 appearances across all competitions.
The American international – who featured for the away side in Town’s 4-1 FA Cup defeat to Man City in January 2022 – kept 10 clean sheets for Michael Carrick’s men and conceded 56 goals during his stint in the north east.
Meanwhile, back-up goalkeeper Liam Roberts has another year to run on his Middlesbrough contract, while Luke Daniels has been confirmed as leaving the club next month.
