LESS than a month after the end of the regular season in the EFL, clubs have begun signing players on pre-contract agreements in a bid to ready themselves for next term as soon as possible.
Of the 19 deals signed off by second, third, and fourth-tier outfits so far, 13 have been completed by League Two outfits – though no players have signed for Swindon Town as yet.
As we lead up to June 14, the start of the domestic summer transfer window, Adver Sport brings you up to date with all the League Two incomings so far.
Gillingham made the first signing of the summer after bringing in former Swindon loanee Conor Masterson on a permanent contact following his release by Queens Park Rangers.
The defender – who featured just five times for Town in the 2020-21 season – spent two previous spells on loan with the Gills with playing time at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium difficult to come by.
Mansfield Town brought Will Swan in on an initial three-year deal from Nottingham Forest for an undisclosed fee early in May.
Swan – who was the Stags’ top scorer with 10 goals in 34 appearances last term – was the first of three signings by Mansfield so far, with former Bristol Rovers left-back Calum MacDonald and ex-Forest Green Rovers defender Baily Cargill bolstering Nigel Clough’s squad.
Cargill has won promotion to the third tier twice before and has signed a two-year contract with the option of a further year at Field Mill.
Doncaster Rovers are the only other team to have made three early acquisitions prior to the summer transfer window opening.
After releasing Jonathan Mitchell, goalkeeper Ian Lawlor returned from a two-year stint with Dundee to sign a two-year contract with Doncaster. Rovers later signed 37-year-old defender Richard Wood in on a one-year deal following his Rotherham United exit before snapping up relegated Hartlepool United right-back Jamie Sterry – also on a two-year deal.
Barrow acquired a couple of players on pre-contract agreements in May. The first was ex-Port Vale midfielder David Worrall on a two-year deal upon his release from Vale Park. A day later, the Bluebirds picked up Junior Tiensia on a one-year contract after the left-back departed Solihull Moors.
Notts County brought in former Oxford United and Coventry City winger Jodi Jones on a two-year deal while AFC Wimbledon signed ex-Swindon midfielder Jake Reeves on a two-year contract upon his release from Stevenage.
Midfielder Matty Daly has agreed a two-year deal with Harrogate after spending the 2022-23 season on loan from Huddersfield Town.
Milton Keynes Dons will make midfielder Alex Gilbey their first summer signing when his Charlton Athletic contract expires at the end of June.
Late on Thursday, June 1, Doncaster agreed a two-year contract - with the option of a further year - for ex-Sheffield United midfielder, George Broadbent.
Meanwhile, AFC Wimbledon will sign Omar Bugiel and Josh Neufville on free transfers at the end of this month.
Bugiel has penned a one-year deal after leaving Sutton United while Neufville has signed a two-year contract upon departing Luton Town.
