THE English summer transfer window is open, and a handful of League Two clubs have begun their business early.

Doncaster Rovers and Grimsby Town have signed at least three players already while several other sides have reinforced their squads with at least one new face.

At the time of writing, Swindon Town are yet to sign anyone new this summer, although Charlie Austin has committed his future to the club by agreeing a new one-year deal.

Former Town attacker Jonny Williams was among the most high-profile of transfers this week, with his expected move to Bradford City taking a last-minute diversion and the Welshman ended up signing for Gillingham on a three-year contract.

The 29-year-old, who was born in Kent, was in Leeds on Wednesday ready to sign for the Bantams, only for the Gills to charge in late and usurp the Yorkshire outfit's offer.

Williams left Swindon this summer after two years at the County Ground.

Elsewhere, Notts County made arguably the signing of the summer so far when they landed ex-Derby County striker David McGoldrick on a two-year deal.

The 35-year-old was a product of the Magpies' academy but left almost 20 years ago for Southampton, only to return upon their promotion back into the Football League.

McGoldrick turned down the offer of a new contract at Derby County, where he bagged three hat-tricks among his 25 goals last term.

Elsewhere, Grimsby signed four players within the last week. After capturing striker Danny Rose from Stevenage for a "five-figure" undisclosed fee, the Mariners moved for ex-Bradford City forward Abo Eisa on a one-year deal.

Paul Hurst's men also brought in striker Donovan Wilson on a two-year contract upon his release from League Two rivals Sutton United.

Completing the Mariners' quartet was Rochdale defender Toby Mullarkey, again for an undisclosed fee.

Attempting to keep up with Grimsby in terms of quantity of signings, Doncaster began by announcing striker Joe Ironside on a three-year deal following his release from Cambridge United.

The 29-year-old was joined by FC Halifax Town left-back Jack Senior on a two-year contract after he left the National League side at the end of June.

Owen Bailey then became Doncaster's seventh summer signing when the midfielder penned a two-year contract after rejecting a new deal from Gateshead.

Crewe Alexandra signed 19-year-old Liverpool goalkeeper Harvey Davies on loan for the full 23-24 season on Wednesday.

Davies was on the bench for Liverpool's first two Champions League fixtures last term but will spend the upcoming season at the Mornflake Stadium under the guidance of Lee Bell.
