SWINDON Town are linked with young Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper, Murphy Mahoney, according to reports.

Town are said to be chasing the 21-year-old stopper on loan with the Robins lacking depth in that area and Mahoney's chances of first-team action at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium thought to be limited.

Swindon only have the inexperienced Conor Brann on their books as things stand and will be keen to bring in at least one goalkeeper before pre-season begins towards the end of this month.

Former loanee, Sol Brynn was one of Town’s leading lights last term but returned to parent club Middlesbrough at the end of the previous campaign.

As a result of his richly-educational season, the 22-year-old will reportedly be given the chance to fight for the number one shirt at the Riverside.

Looking to find a suitable replacement, Swindon are reportedly in talks with the Reading-born gloveman as they attempt to bring Mahoney in for the 2023-24 season, according to a Patreon story by football journalist, Alan Nixon.

After joining in 2012 aged 10, Mahoney progressed through QPR's academy system and into the Under-21s in 2020.

The following year, he experienced a brief spell on loan at Stratford Town before similar stints with Welling United and Bath City in National League South.

In August and September 2021, Mahoney played five games for Welling - conceding 15 goals. He then featured twice for Bath in October and November, where he saw seven shots beat him.

Towards the end of the 2021-22 campaign, Mahoney made his senior debut for the R's in a 2-1 defeat away to Preston North End after an injury to Kieron Westwood in the warm up. It was the first of two Championship outings for Mahoney so far, as the young stopper later featured in a 3-1 reverse against Sheffield United.

The 21-year-old will be looking to impress in the final season of his current QPR contract, with 40-plus games in Wiltshire potentially seen as an ideal opportunity to do so.

After signing his latest deal in 2022, Mahoney told club media: "I just want to keep progressing.

“I want to play as many senior games as possible, if not here then maybe go on loan to develop and see where that takes me.”

He was set to join Mike Flynn's Walsall on loan for the rest of the season in January 2023, but the deal was called off late due to an injury to fellow QPR goalkeeper, Joe Walsh.
