SPRINT ace Jonathan Dumbutshena broke the Swindon Harriers’ 19-year-old under 15s 200m record in the final Wessex Young Athletes League match at the County Ground on Sunday.
Dumbutshena scorched to victory in a time of 23.7secs to shave 0.2secs off the time set by Luke Smith at Loughborough in 2004 and add that to his 100m club record of 11.51secs which he ran last month.
Dumbutshena’s record run, plus a superb hat-trick of wins from Laila-Jae Belgrave and a double by Ella Spencer, were among the highlights of a thumping win for the Harriers though sadly it was not enough to beat Basingstoke to the overall title.
“Obviously it was a shame to lose the title to Basingstoke on what was really a technicality but there it is, we can’t do anything about it now,” said Martin Smith, who is one of the joint team managers along with Craig Scott and Gemma Scott.
“But we were third last year and now second so we are on an upward curve. I’m not going to say we will win it next year but that will be our goal.
“Overall, we have had a really good season and we are going in the right direction. Everything points towards the fact that we are capable of winning the league and the signs are very positive.
“All the young athletes have made Craig, Gemma and myself immensely proud.”
Belgrave claimed a hat-trick of victories in the U17s 100m, 80m hurdles and shot putt and Spencer’s two wins came in the 300m and 1500m.
Kalina Karacheva and Meredith Prosser claimed maximum points in the high jump while Eloise Foster and Bella Ryder did likewise in the 800m.
Throwers Holly Scott and Lucy Bull have piled up countless points for the club in the under-15 girls’ age group this season and continued that with Scott winning the shot and 75m hurdles and Bull the javelin.
The U13 boys swept the board in the 100m (Ethan Bryon and Kurtis Osei-Ofosu), 200m (Bryon and Jody-Lloyd Owusu), 800m (Jesse Bryant and Oliver Forbes-Smith) and 1500m (Finley Byrne and Dylan Necrews).
Joshua Steward and Harry Burdekin did the double in the U15s 1500m and Ben Charlesworth won the 800m and Emmanual Daramola and Alex Bentley dominated the U17s 100m.
