SWINDON Town manager Michael Flynn thought his starting XI were “superb” during the Robins’ 2-2 draw with Eastleigh on Saturday.
A Charlie Austin penalty before half-time and an excellent long-range strike from Saidou Khan prior to the hour mark put the League Two club in complete control against their National League hosts at the Silverlake Stadium.
But after Flynn had switched the majority of his players during the second half, Eastleigh struck back with two late goals to rescue a draw.
The pattern of Town’s performance followed previous pre-season games against Bristol City and Swansea City – matches where Flynn’s men had arguably played the better football early on before fading as time wore on and substitutions were made.
Assessing the overall performance against Eastleigh on Saturday, Flynn said: “I thought we were absolutely superb until I made changes.
“Some of the football we played… we should have scored more. If it was 5-0 at half-time, nobody would have thought we didn’t deserve it.
“Some of [the football we played] was excellent, and when we add a few [players] to it, it’s only going to get better.”
Aguiar returns to former club on loan.
In pre-season warm-ups against Eastleigh, Bristol City, and Swansea, Town were a goal up against the National League club while a goal down but arguably the better side in contests with the Championship pair.
But significant dips after the break has confirmed to Flynn that he must add further quality to his group in order to prevent the same pattern occurring in League Two.
He said: “Against Bristol City in the first hour, we were superb. Against Swansea in the first half, superb.
“When we make the changes, yeah, it goes to show that we probably need a little bit more in depth. Until we made the changes, I was more than pleased. But it’s only pre-season.”
