SWINDON Town manager Michael Flynn has admitted he would like to add some more physicality to his squad but says he won’t deviate away from his first target in a bid to speed up the process.
Flynn has brought goalkeeper Murphy Mahoney and attacking midfielder Dan Kemp to the club since taking over, both arriving on season-long loans from Queens Park Rangers and Milton Keynes Dons, respectively.
The pair have settled in quickly at Swindon and produced strong pre-season showings as they prepare for their Robins debut away at Colchester United on Saturday, August 5.
But with less than a fortnight until the start of the new League Two season, many fans are anxious over the lack of signings that would round Swindon out and make them genuinely competitive in a difficult league.
Liquidator appointment at Axis business 'nothing to be concerned about'
Speaking after Eastleigh, Flynn said: “The certain ones that I’m going for, they’re going to cost what they cost.
“Just because it’s taking longer than we’d all hope – I’m not going to lie about that – it doesn’t mean I’m going to go out and sign somebody who is not my first target. We’ve got to be patient, and let’s see where it gets us.
Town 'in talks' with former Scottish Premiership defender.
“Like I’ve said before, in an ideal world, we’d have all our business done and we could just concentrate on the start of the season.
“It’s me, I’m doing all the phone calls, I’m working with Jamie [Russell – head of football] and it’s non-stop.
“There will still probably be one or two leaving as well to get game time, so there will be activity before the start of the season – that’s all I can say.”
Young Robins pair head out on short-term loan.
Plenty has been made of Town’s lack of experience by fans, with many feeling some older heads are needed to guide the younger talents through potentially difficult times to come.
Flynn agrees in part but stated bringing in players over the age of 30 will not guarantee a smother ride through bumpy periods.
Highlighting Kemp’s effect on the group since the forward arrived, Flynn said: “Experience doesn’t necessarily mean old.
“You’ve got people like Dan Kemp – he’s a very good footballer, he’s experienced in this league – albeit not as much as a Jake Taylor who played for [Eastleigh].
“But Dan is a good acquisition who improves us. He’s got the intelligence to take on board what we’re asking of him.
“Do we need some more physicality? I do think so. I’m not going to dress that up. But it is what it is, and I’m just trying to bring the right ones in.”
