SWINDON TOWN ended their pre-season schedule with a victory on Saturday, defeating Championship outfit Plymouth Argyle 3-1.
Second half goals by Dan Kemp and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy came in quick succession to give the hosts a comfortable lead.
Morgan Whittaker halved the deficit not long after, but substitute Jacob Wakeling’s strike in the final moments secured an impressive win.
Town named a full-strength line-up for their final pre-season fixture, with new signing Kemp making his first appearance at the County Ground.
Argyle started brightly against their lower league opponents, with Bali Mumba and ex-Town loanee Kaine Kesler-Hayden having early efforts blocked by the Town defence.
A lovely cross-field ball from Saidou Khan towards Remeao Hutton in the 14th minute spurred Swindon’s first opportunity to test the Plymouth defence, but the wing-backs delivery was unable to find an incoming Kemp.
The Pilgrims best chance of the first half arrived inside the 23rd minute, through Wright.
The forward fired a powerful effort towards goal which forced Murphy Mahoney to make a tricky save and put it behind for a corner.
In the dying embers of the first period, Hutton whipped in an enticing ball towards Hepburn-Murphy at back post, who’s headed effort was superbly kept out by Conor Hazard. The chance was then flagged up for offside on the forward.
Swindon managed to break the deadlock in the 56th minute, through an audacious strike by summer signing Kemp.
A ball was floated to the midfielder on the edge of the box, who struck a volley which nestled beautifully into the left-hand corner to make it 1-0.
The League Two side doubled their lead just two minutes later, through a composed finish from Hepburn-Murphy.
The forward was neatly played through by Hutton down the right, who made no mistake slotting his close-range effort past Hazard to extend his sides lead.
Deadlock-breaker Kemp had a fine chance to score his second of the afternoon in the 63rd minute, but had his effort inside the box well-blocked by the Argyle defence.
The goals continued to fly in during the second half, but it would be Plymouth’s turn to get on the scoresheet, halving the deficit in the 68th minute through Whittaker.
The midfielder cut onto his left foot and his well-hit strike proved too much for goalkeeper Mahoney, who watched it fly into his net to make it 2-1.
Kemp had yet another clear-cut chance on goal just moments later, but Hazard quickly came off his line to make a crucial save.
The victory was set in stone in the 86th minute, after substitute Wakeling led a counter-attack and finished his strike with ease to make it 3-1 and sign off pre-season in style for Town.
