SWINDON Town manager Michael Flynn believes both Jake Young and Dan Kemp will remain at the County Ground for the full season despite the in-form pair being on loan from fellow League Two clubs.
Young signed from Bradford City at the start of August and has since scored seven goals – four of which arrived on Saturday – while providing three assists in five appearances.
Meanwhile, Kemp – who arrived for the full campaign from Milton Keynes Dons – has claimed four goals and three assists from his five outings.
After sparkling starts from both players, there is already a degree of concern among fans that early call-backs could significantly effect Town’s fortunes over the second half of the season.
Flynn says he cannot say for sure what the future holds but says “good faith” tells him there will not be any nasty surprises.
He said: “I can’t give any assurances to the fans because it’s out of our hands. We did what we could to get the players in [permanently] in the first instance.
“They are both on season-long loans. There is a small break clause in both, but it is only a small one.
“Now, unless they’re going to go back and play at their clubs or somebody puts in a ridiculous offer for one of them that the other club can’t turn down, I’d like to think – in good faith – that they’ll be here for the duration of the season.”
Fans will likely remember the situation Town found themselves in when bringing Eoin Doyle to the club from Bradford during the 2019-20 campaign.
After ‘the Ginger Pele’ plundered 23 goals in 23 appearances, he was called back in a bid to force Swindon’s hand – a tactic that caused the Robins to turn Doyle’s loan into a permanent move.
Asked whether Town may follow suit with Young – even at this early stage – Flynn said: “It’s probably the wrong time to do it after today because the other teams won’t let them go!
“We’ve tried to sign Dan Kemp on a permanent basis, but Milton Keynes Dons hold the cards there.
“And Jake is a player I like. I’ve got a good relationship with Ryan Sparks at Bradford City, and it was us two who connected and got the deal over the line.
“They like Jake there, but they just wanted him to play regular football. They felt that he would have an opportunity to do that with us having a small squad.
“I really don’t know [how likely it is they sign permanently]. It’s going to be a bit more difficult with Jake, especially if he keeps scoring like this.”
