JONATHAN Dumbutshena is celebrating a stunning victory at the England Athletics Under 15 and 17 Championships in Birmingham.
The Harriers teenager, who is coached by Tony Jackson, won the U15 boys’ 200m title in a personal best time and new club record of 22.45secs, beating Luke Smith’s 19-year-old mark of 23.9secs.
“I have put in a lot of hard work, and I would say - 100 per cent - that win is my best-ever achievement,” said Dumbutshena, who moved up to fifth in the UK Rankings.
“A lot of credit must go to my coach Tony as he has consistently pushed me to help make me the best athlete I can be. We have a very strong bond.”
Coach Jackson also believes that Dumbutshena is the first club sprinter to win a national title.
“I have been coaching at the club for 20 years and never known a sprinter do that before,” said Jackson.
Dumbutshena’s brilliant victory came barely 24 hours after he won a bronze in the 100m having twice bettered his personal best to reach the final.
Firstly, he clocked 11.30secs in the heats to beat his previous best of 11.42secs, and then improved upon that again in the semi finals with a fourth place in 11.27secs, another club record.
Finally, Dumbutshena repeated that PB exactly to clinch the bronze medal behind Folkestone’s Victor Redman (11.14secs) and David Rick of Harlow (11.17secs).
And he wasn’t the only medal winner for the club over the weekend as there was also a bronze medal for Holly Scott in the U15s hammer.
Scott, who is coached by Alan Brown, was using her new four-turn technique, and that paid off handsomely as she smashed her PB and own club record by over two metres.
Going to the championships with a PB of 42.38m, set a month ago, Scott unearthed a huge throw of 44.70m to secure third spot in a high-quality competition.
There were also three highly commendable sixth-placed finishes by Harriers’ athletes. Al Virgilio (coach Kevin Buttle) was sixth in the U15 boys’ 800m, clocking 2mins 03.03secs, while Ella Spencer (coach John Dill) matched that in the U17s 1500m in a time of 4:40.98.
In the hammer, Billy Dickinson was sixth in the U17s event with 52.64m, while training partner Archie Kinneir (both coached by Alan Brown) was 13th with 40.09m.
Laila-Jae Belgrave also made the trip to Birmingham and ran 12.43secs in the heats of the U15s 80m hurdles.
Elsewhere, in-form Michael Gilbert was top veteran over 40 in the Severn Bridge half marathon clocking 79mins 01secs.
