Swindon Town's Saidou Khan is confirmed safe after an earthquake in Morocco killed more than 800 people.

The midfielder was in the country on international duty for Gambia, who are due to play Congo in Marrakesh on Sunday in their final qualifier for next year's African Cup of Nations.

The historic city is among the worst affected areas by the quake.

In a statement made on Twitter account, Swindon Town said: “Our thoughts go out to the families and friends of loved ones that have been affected by the Morocco Earthquake.

“We can confirm that we have made contact with Saidou Khan, while on international duty with Gambia, and he is okay and out of danger.”

Fans reacted to the news that Khan was okay.

One said: “Been thinking about him all morning, glad he and his teammates are okay”.

Another said: “Thank god but awful for those who have been affected”.

Moroccan state TV confirmed on Saturday morning that at least 820 people died, quoting interior ministry figures.

The 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck central Morocco just after 11pm local time on Friday night.

It is unknown currently whether Gambia's game against Congo will go ahead.

Gambia need to avoid losing by a five-goal swing to qualify for the finals, held in the Ivory Coast in January and February.
