Michael Flynn said that Swindon Town are not reliant on one player as his team prepares to face Milton Keynes Dons without Dan Kemp this weekend.
The on-loan midfielder has been a revelation for Swindon this season, scoring eight goals and providing five more assists, meaning that he has been directly involved with 24 goals in League Two during 2023 across his spells at the County Ground and with Hartlepool United.
However, as Kemp is on loan from this weekend’s opponents MK Dons, Flynn will have to figure out how to set up without him for the first time this season on Saturday as he will not be available for selection.
The Town boss said after defeat to Gillingham that he is not unduly concerned about being without his number ten, as his side does not depend on just one player to function.
He said: “We will have a look tomorrow, we will go in and the players will be on a cool down and recovery to get them fresh for Saturday, which is going to be another tough game.
“Somebody has got to step up, it can’t just be Dan Kemp.
“We are not a one-man team and we can’t think that we are a one-man team.
“I know that he is big in the things that we do, but somebody else has got to step up and it is as simple as that.”
One player who will not be replacing Kemp is Jake Cain after he suffered an injury setback after Town’s game against Salford City on Saturday.
The midfielder had recovered quickly from a foot injury he picked up against Grimsby Town which it was initially suggested would rule him out for “anything between four and 12 weeks.”
However, Cain returned in just three weeks in time to be on the bench for Town’s 2-2 draw at the Peninsular Stadium, where he was an unused substitute.
The former Liverpool youngster was then not involved in the matchday squad on Tuesday for Swindon’s game against Gillingham after he picked up another injury following the Salford game that will likely rule him out for a few weeks.
Flynn said: “He [Cain] got injured in the post-match running at Salford, so that was disappointing as well.
“We don’t have a timescale on that, he just felt something in his calf, so I would probably say [he will be out for] a couple of weeks.”
