Michael Flynn feels that Swindon Town have experienced some very high highs and low lows over their first 20 games in League Two.

Town sit eighth in the table at the 20-game mark having scored the most goal in the division with 43 and let in the joint third most with 36, with more goals going in during games featuring Swindon than any other side in the EFL, in a start to the season that has been marked for its twists and turns.

Compared with the same stage in recent seasons, Swindon are one place and one point worse off than they were under Scott Lindsey and three points behind where Ben Garner had got the team in 2021/22.

Flynn felt that his side’s 4-3 victory over Accrington Stanley had been a microcosm of their season as a whole, as they displayed some exceptional attacking football that had seen them scoring goals at will, but also struggling to correctly manage the game and shipping goals at an inopportune point in the game.

He said: “I would say [that the season has been] like what you have just seen tonight [against Accrington].

“We have been excellent at times, frustrating at others, and we definitely have things to work on.

“It is early doors and we are not even halfway through the season yet, we are going to have to have a good January.”

Flynn had previously questioned the desire of some of his players as they went on a run of just one win across nine league matches but now believes that they have responded well to the challenge he gave them.

Following Town’s 4-2 defeat against Stockport County, Flynn said of his players: “Our players should be watching those Stockport players and learning how to play a game of football properly.

“I have just told them that I can’t wait to get to January because I need players in who can do it and I need some players out.

“I just don’t think they can do it for the full 90 minutes, it is nothing to do with fitness, it is about desire and commitment.”

Speaking post-Accrington, Flynn felt his players had given him cause to change his mind in the three weeks since that game: “Like I have said seven points in a week is a fantastic return and the players have really dug in and shown that they want to play for this football club.”
