Swindon Supermarine head coach Stuart Fleetwood said he feels like his side will be safe if they continue to play as they are.

Fleetwood came back to the club he had captained as a player in September with Supermarine winless and bottom of the Southern League Premier South and has since begun to turn the ship around as they are now just five points off safety.

Fleetwood said survival was his only real goal when he arrived and feels things are looking up at the Webbswood Stadium right now.

He said: “When I first went in I said to the chairman, owners, and directors that it would take a little bit of time because we were so cut adrift, I think we were about 11 or 12 points from safety.

“Now we have cut that to five points, so we are headed in the right direction and with our form I think we are eighth over the last five games and over the last ten games we are about 11th or 12th.

“What we have stopped doing is losing easy games, we are picking up draws and we have been disappointed with some of them, but in the position we are in we need to take every point we can get.

“Every team we have played has talked us up about how well we are playing and we are in a false position, but the points don’t lie.

“I think once we get out of the relegation area we will be looking up from there and that’s going to be a massive confidence boost.

“If we carry on with the form we are in we will probably end up about mid-table.”

Fleetwood has also managed to turn around Supermarine’s fortunes while playing attractive, possession-based football.

He said: “As a coach, I think you have to stick to your principles and the way I have explained it is that I want to go out playing this way.

“I got the job on the Wednesday and came in and had a meeting with the players on the Thursday and I wrote down all of my core values and what I expect.

“Not everybody is going to believe in it and not everyone is going to enjoy it, but you need to build up a group who do.

“Now I have got every player at the club that I want there and I have managed to bring a few in that I needed.

“We have two formations that we play and I don’t deviate away from that, so there are no grey areas for my players.

“We always work on the same things over and over, but we are reaping the rewards of that because I don’t have to coach as much because the lads know what to expect.

“I think once you stick to those principles and with the way you want to play, once the results start coming then you do start to believe a little bit more and the players have taken it on board brilliantly.”
