The Celebration of Swindon Speedway event has helped to raise £4,000 for the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund.
In October 2023, 400 fans, former riders, and officials came out to the Blunsdon House Hotel for an event to celebrate 70 years of speedway in Swindon.
The event comprised of rider interviews with track presenter Clive Fisher, a book launch of the “History of Abbey Stadium – Swindon”, displays of bikes and memorabilia, and an audio-visual show covering the 70 years of the Robins and it had to be split into two programmes to accommodate the level of demand from the public.
Through sales of the book, souvenir pots of racing shale from the Abbey Stadium, other club memorabilia, and a raffle, the event managed to raise £4,000 for charity.
At a ceremony last Tuesday, the cheque was presented to the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund and their mascot BEN.
Chairman of the charity Paul Ackroyd said: “It was a wonderful effort by Swindon Speedway fans who were regularly at the top of our track collections when the Robins were running.
“The money will enable the SRBF to assist injured riders and their families and we hope the club can return the sport to a new venue.”
