Gavin Gunning admitted that he felt like he must do a better job of fitting the Swindon Town players into a structure that suits them best.
Swindon have played much of this season setting up in Michael Flynn’s preferred 3412 formation, a set-up he used in all but two games of his tenure as Town boss, but once Gunning came in he quickly switched that up.
The 33-year-old instantly changed to a back four and has used that in all but one of his ten games, generally operating in a 4231 formation although he has used multiple systems.
However, Gunning said ahead of Swindon facing Doncaster Rovers on Saturday, that he believes that he has been attempting to fit the squad into his own structure rather than building one around their strengths.
He said: “At times it depends on what you are going towards and how we are trying to play and who we have got.
“For example, if you don’t have a marauding full-back then you have to change your strategy, if you don’t have someone who can run as a ten, if you have a technician as a ten or you have a striker, it is all just different.
“It depends on what you have got, and you have to mould yourself into a shape that suits the players.
“I guess that I have been trying to do it where they fit into my shape.
"We have had the three and it did not work so I have tried to come away from that and go to a four.
“We have still conceded some rubbish goals, but I think we have had more stability and looked more solid, in a couple of the games we haven’t been as solid and that is the frustration.”
The interim head coach added that he believed that once a stable system that suits everyone could be found, it would help other things fall into place.
He said: “When you find your level of consistency, that is when it finally clicks, when you have that consistency and you are grinding games out, you are tough to beat, and you are keeping clean sheets.
“Unless you are scoring like 80 goals a season then you have to keep like ten or 12 clean sheets minimum to be that team who is up there.
“When you have that solid base behind, that is when you have a real chance.”
