An update on the development of the County Ground is expected imminently, according to The Swindon Town Supporters Trust.
The Trust and the club bought the stadium in a joint venture in March 2023 and have a three-year window in which to commit to a £1 million development project before the council would have an option to buy back the ground.
Speaking to The Adver, new Trust Vice Chair James Phipps said that they are expecting a plan for development to be presented to them soon.
He said: “We are hopeful that at the next Joint Venture board meeting a plan is going to be presented.
“We are not in control of that being presented, but we are led to believe that it will be and anything that we can do to help in that regard, we would absolutely do.
“It is very clear that the long-term success of the club will come from having multiple income streams which are year-round, not just on match days.
“I am sure that James’ [Watts, Chief Commercial Officer] concerts are going to be a great success, but I don’t think they are going to solve all of the club’s losses.
“We are not ultimately responsible for the redevelopment, but we can persistently chase up, and say ‘Where are the plans? And where is a credible financial arrangement to deliver those plans?’
“We need to know that it is deliverable, and I am hoping in the next Joint Venture meeting that becomes a bit clearer.”
Although delivering that redevelopment of the ground is important, Phipps was keen to stress the importance of it being the right redevelopment before the Trust would agree to it.
He said: “There is one chance to do it right and what you don’t want to do is run into something and then think we settled for second best.
“I think that we have got a responsibility to the fans before us and those that come after us to do the very best possible job.
“That ground has not had any development for decades and it is a mess behind the scenes.
“This is the chance to do it right and really improve the ground and bring that money in.
“We have to balance keeping that pressure on and trying to get the right thing, as a board we can’t unreasonably withhold permission for that development, but clearly the club would want the fans to be supportive of that process.”
