Swindon Town have not ruled out the possibility of making a summer move for current loanee Dawson Devoy, according to interim head coach Gavin Gunning.
The Irish midfielder joined Swindon on loan in January from Milton Keynes Dons after Dan Kemp had returned from his own loan spell during the first half of the season, essentially replacing Devoy in the Buckinghamshire club’s pecking order.
Devoy has netted three goals during his loan spell at the County Ground, two of which came in a match-winning performance off the bench against AFC Wimbledon last weekend.
The Republic of Ireland under-21 international still has another year on his contract with his parent club, but Gunning has not ruled out Devoy coming back to Swindon next season.
He said: “100 per cent [I think he could be here next season]. I think that he loves it here and he loves the work that we are doing.
“We have been trying to improve him and I think you can see the improvements in his game since he has come here.
“When he first arrived he played sideways, he would move, and he would try a diag[onal through ball].
“But now he is getting beyond the striker and he looks like a real threat.
“We haven’t really had a number six in the squad, Nnamdi [Ofoborh] has come in in the last few games and he has taken that, but we have been trying to throw everybody into that hole and see if anybody could fill it.
“When Dawson first came in I thought he was one of our best players, if not the best player because he was playing higher.
“But with Sads [Saidou Khan] getting injured, he had to play the deeper one and that hindered his effect going forward, which you could see at the weekend when he scored two goals.”
Devoy himself said that he was hoping to be playing regular football next season whichever club that would be at.
He said: “I am not sure [about my future], I have to go back to MK in June and see what happens there.
“Obviously they are fighting for promotion at the minute so it is a bit frantic, but I am not sure [what will happen] is my honest answer.
“Of course, every footballer wants to play every week and so I will be looking to try and do that this summer wherever that may be.”
