It was heartbreak for Royal Wootton Bassett in the Hellenic League Premier Division playoff final as they were defeated 4-0 by Cinderford Town.
Bassett were hoping to reach the Southern League for the first time in the club’s history as they hosted the playoff final at the Sustain Stadium following a fabulous season.
Having finished the regular season in fourth place to set up a semi-final with local rivals Highworth Town, they were able to pull off the upset as Oliver Case nodded home shortly before the break to secure passage into the playoff final.
Cinderford had also managed to knock out the side who had finished the season higher up the table, as they beat Corsham Town in the semis, leaving Bassett with a final on home turf.
But in front of a crowd of almost 1,000 people on Tuesday night, it was not to be for Bassett as the visitors scored two goals in the space of two first-half minutes to have a strong lead at the break.
Despite Bassett fighting back and even striking the woodwork, they were unable to launch the comeback and eventually, Cinderford scored twice more to ensure they bounced straight back to the Southern League.
