Swindon Town have approached former players about taking up a role in the coaching staff, according to a report by The Ink.
Town remain in search of their next head coach, having been without a permanent incumbent since Michael Flynn parted ways with the club in mid-January.
Rumours have swirled around the possibility of Derek Adams and Dean Brennan taking over, with Barnet saying that an approach for their head coach from Swindon had been rejected, and the role remains vacant.
However, rumours have now emerged that, as they look to fill the vacant head coaching role, Town are also on the hunt for another coach, to work alongside whomever the new boss will be.
In his latest column for The Ink, Sam Morshead wrote that he had been informed that Swindon have been actively pursuing people to join the coaching staff and have specifically targeted candidates with a prior connection to the County Ground.
He said: “The Ink is aware of former Swindon players now in coaching being contacted by the current hierarchy, including messages from majority shareholder Clem Morfuni himself, to gauge their interest in joining Town. But not in a head coach role.”
Gavin Gunning’s assistant, Jimmy Shan, joined in late March on a deal that lasted until the end of this season, were this report to be accurate then it would make it seem unlikely that his stay would be extended.
There had been a suggestion that the approach for Brennan would also involve him being the assistant head coach, although the Adver understands that this was not the case.
The search for a permanent head coach continues three weeks after the end of the season, with the only update from the club about the search coming from owner Clem Morfuni’s programme notes for the final game of the season against Morecambe.
Morfuni said: “We know across a number of areas that we need to do better and we will always take the opportunity to learn from this campaign, ensuring that we have a team capable of challenging for promotion sooner rather than later.
“This is why we will be assessing the best management team to deliver the success we aspire for ahead of the new season in plenty of time, to allow us to plan and ensure we have the right mix of experience and youth to build a team capable of promotion, which remains our ambition.”
