Former Swindon Town midfielder Yaser Kasim has announced his retirement from football after a 14-year career in the sport.
The 33-year-old revealed in an article on Medium and on LinkedIn that he had decided to call time on his playing career to focus on coaching and other industries.
Kasim spent four seasons at Swindon, being a core part at the centre of the 2014/15 side alongside Massimo Luongo that achieved the club’s highest league finish this century and made the League One playoff final.
The Iraq international made 122 appearances during his time at the County Ground, scoring seven goals across those four campaigns.
During his time with Swindon, Kasim became a big part of the Iraq national team as they reached the semi-finals of the AFC Asia Cup in 2015, scoring a key winning goal in their opener against Jordan and netting his penalty in the quarter-final shootout against Iran.
Kasim came through the academy ranks at Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton and Hove Albion prior to arriving at Swindon and following his departure in 2017 he spent time with Northampton, in Sweden with Orebro, in the Iraqi Stars League with Erbil and Zakho, before finishing his career with various clubs in Non-League back in England.
