Former Swindon Town goalkeeper Matej Kovar has been included in the Czech Republic’s final squad for the UEFA European Championship 2024.

Kovar will be off to Germany this summer, four years on from being part of Town’s League One relegation campaign in 2020/21, as he has been picked as part of Ivan Hasek’s final squad for the Euros.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper has enjoyed a wonderful season for his club side Bayer Leverkusen, being their designated cup goalkeeper as they won the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal as well as finishing runners-up in the Europa League, losing just one match across all competitions for the entire season.

The 24-year-old only has one cap for his country, playing the entirety of the Czech Republic’s most recent international as they defeated Armenia 2-1.

He has been called up to the squad on the last three occasions, although was on the bench in each of the Euros qualifiers, with Jiri Pavlenka, Ales Mandous, and Jindrich Stanek all having started for Naši in the last year.

Stanek is the only one of those who has been included in this squad, and he is expected to start having played both of their last two qualifiers against Poland and Moldova, as well as starting against Norway in a March friendly.

Alongside Kovar in the squad are West Ham United duo Vladimir Coufal and Tomas Soucek, and Kovar’s Bayer Leverkusen teammates Patrick Schick and Adam Hlozek.

The Czech Republic are in Group D for the tournament alongside Portugal, Georgia, and Turkey and they will be hoping to replicate their great run from Euro 2020 as they made the quarterfinals having finished as a best third-place team in England’s group.

Kovar is the second former Swindon player to be called up for this tournament, with Timi Max Elsnik also representing Slovenia.
