Swindon Town are taking a closer look at Cheltenham Town goalkeeper Max Harris as he has come on trial with the club.

As they began their preparations for the new season against Swindon Supermarine, Town had four trialists as part of their squad, including two goalkeepers, and one has been revealed to be Harris.

The goalkeeper played the second half at The Webbswood Stadium after, according to John Palmer of Gloucestershire Live, he has been given the opportunity to seek a move away from The Completely-Suzuki Stadium.

 

 

Harris, who has spent time with Hereford and Oxford United, has impressed during loan spells in the National League South with Weston-super-Mare and Bath City.

The 24-year-old knows Swindon assistant manager Marcus Bignot, who took the team against Supermarine, from their time together at Cheltenham during the 2022/23 season.

Swindon gave the chance to two trialist goalkeepers during the friendly, with Jack Bycroft and Redman Evans not involved in the squad, and Bignot said after the game that the trialists were being given a serious look.

He said: “Yes [we are looking at them seriously], for all of the trialists that were on show today it was an opportunity for us to get eyes on them and really judge them.

“It is always good to put them into a match environment because ultimately that is what they are going to be judged on. All of the trialists were with a view to being potential signings.”

Bycroft and Evans are the current goalkeepers contracted by Town but Mark Kennedy and Jamie Russell are evidently assessing their options for further competition by bringing in two other players on trial.

The other goalkeeper is rumoured to be former Cardiff City stopper Rohan Luthra, who left The Bluebirds at the end of last season having made just one senior appearance for the club.

Just was a late substitute against Preston North End following a red card for Jak Alnwick, becoming the first-ever goalkeeper from the British South Asian community to play in the second tier.

The 22-year-old kept four clean sheets during 12 appearances for Slough Town last season as he spent three months on loan with the club.

The two other trialists played either side of Harrison Minturn as part of a back three during the second half of Saturday’s match, one of whom was referred to by Kennedy on Thursday as being an “outstanding young talent” the club are looking at.
